A history of offshore tax jurisdictions
The origin of low financial jurisdictions can be found during the middle ages when trade wars arose between different countries and regions competed amongst themselves for economic dominance. A clear example can be seen in the story of the Channel Islands initial development as an offshore tax haven. Indeed we can spot some common underlying themes in its development, which are shared with other low tax financial centres.
The firstly it is common that direct central control, in this case the Crown of England, remains loose and weaker in ties of geography and historic allegiance than the mainland. The Channel Islands whilst traditionally part of Duchy of Normandy since 1204, in actual fact following the loss of the rest of the monarch’s lands in mainland Normandy – were governed as separate possessions of the English crown. The separate jurisdictions of Guernsey, Jersey, Alderney and Sark are still all subordinate fiefs of the Duchy, and were never consolidated after the loss of the majority of Normandy in 1204 by King John. Control by Britain whilst solid today was often in the intervening years far from certain. Today the historic differences and separate legal status allows them to function as an offshore finance. Until recently it could be argues Jersey and Guernsey were arguably tax havens.
Likewise the Isle of Man with its turbulent history of passing between Viking, Welsh, English and Scottish dominance has evolved a separate legal status. Indeed to one extent or the other the island has always provided an offshore tax haven location for the more wealthy. This was firmly fixed after 1866, when the Isle of Man obtained a measure of at least nominal home rule. At the present day the benefits can be seen in the Isle of Mans rise as a prosperous community, with its evolving offshore finance centre and low tax jurisdiction status.
In both the case of Gibraltar and Malta a complex, shifting history of allegiance and various form s of legal independence has allowed them to develop offshore finance centres and low tax regimes.
Into the modern period it is commonly accepted that the definition of a tax haven and/or low tax jurisdiction was first formed around the time of just after World War I. For example Lichtenstein was hands-on in the mid 1920’s in trying to attract foreign investments and established its Offshore Trust Law. Further a field Bermuda created Offshore Company Laws about ten years later and began some of first moves in endeavouring to be a Corporate Tax Haven. Most tax havens were associated with individual avoidance of tax, or at least the reduction of tax liabilities. However, in the post war years, companies became over-burdened by taxation. This is when Corporate Tax Havens and the offshore tax industry were born. Companies could take advantage of tax treaties between their home nation and the offshore tax jurisdiction to reduce their liabilities. This worked for a while, but the technicalities that permitted this were eliminated as the home jurisdictions once they realised the amount of revenue they were potentially losing.
During the 1980’s, the IBC – International Business Corporation – was created in some Corporate Tax Havens. A key driving force were the financial jurisdictions that wanted to entice foreign companies, established offshore company legislation and vehicles that were not subject to local taxation. These were of course very attractive to overseas companies and corporations. The first offshore financial centres to establish the IBC were Gibraltar and certain offshore finance centres in the Caribbean such as the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands. Recently in well published moves these have been amended when the OECD – the Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development – took taxation matters into hand and exerted pressure upon the offshore financial centres to change they way of working with these overseas companies.
Quite what the future holds for low tax offshore finance jurisdictions remains obscure, however it is fair to say the days of the tax haven as a vehicle to avoid tax are over. For more articles in a similar view please visit: Our Blog section

A certain amount of stress, of course, can be beneficial. In small to moderate amounts, it really doesn’t hurt and, indeed, may be necessary in order to motivate us into getting things done and prodding us into performing at our very best.
But when stress takes on too much of a driving, overpowering role, it can exact a real toll and have truly damaging effects on both our mental and physical health.
Such, unfortunately, is the case in many industrialised countries such as the UK, the US, Canada and Australia today, where the most common mental health issues are anxiety and depression and in which stress plays a major underlying role.
At work, stress can turn us into jittery, anxious and resentful workers, unable to function as we really should; while at home, stress can provoke marital conflict and problems with children.
Often, we are able to notice the signs of stress in others much easier than we can in ourselves.
Yet few of us truly know how to manage stress — even if we are fully aware we suffer from it. We simply lack the stress management and stress relief strategies for dealing with and releasing it.
And so alcohol, drugs, tranquillizers and anti-depressants are regularly turned to in an attempt to escape from and cope with the often devastating and frequently incapacitating effects of stress. But such attempted remedies are far from being effective stress treatment; they are temporary at best and short sighted at worst.
Usually however, they merely serve to worsen and aggravate an already inflamed situation.
Yet there are other ways to deal with and manage stress that are really effective and far from harmful. Meditation, yoga, good nutrition and exercise are all classical and effective methods of stress busting. (In fact, we recommend that everyone engages in some form of regular exercise.)
But for sheer effectiveness and rapidity of results, few things can match the power of self-hypnosis for stress management and stress treatment.
This is because in hypnosis you can experience a state of being that is so far removed from stress that it has sometimes been referred to as ‘a state of grace’.

Here in the UK, we teach people how to enter a deep trance state in a matter of seconds. Remaining in this wonderful, calm state of hypnosis for a few short minutes, they are able to let go of and free themselves from the harmful and potentially devastating effects of stress.
But learning self-hypnosis from a hypnotherapist is certainly not the only way. True, this is the easiest, most rapid and effective method of mastering the art of self-hypnosis since, correctly done, it is taught while actually in the trance state, but it is not the only way. A visit to your local book shop will produce a selection of good books that will take you through the process step by step.
One thing is sure: time invested in learning and practising self-hypnosis pays very real dividends in the area of real stress management and stress relief. It is an extremely potent method that enables you to manage stress and is perhaps the most effective stress treatment there is.
If stress is something you find yourself struggling with on a regular basis, self- hypnosis – together with good nutrition and moderate exercise – is the very best stress management and stress relief tool you could use.

Inspection and maintenance of steel roof and wall cladding systems
How often should inspections take place?
They should be carried out periodically through the building’s lifetime. It is difficult to quantify how often as different building locations and designs will demand different levels of maintenance. It is suggested that the building be inspected after the first year of occupation to assess future maintenance requirements and the duration required between inspections.
In line with Health & Safety Executive (HSE) latest Working at Height Regulations, every effort must be made to avoid having to go on to the roof to facilitate inspections. It may be possible to inspect the roof from a cherry picker, an access hatch or with binoculars from ground level or adjacent buildings.
Build up of dirt and debris
A build-up of dirt and debris can occur on all surfaces, on all elevations and on roof cladding. Such build-up will be particularly profound at any irregularity, such as at corners, penetrations and gutters. In some environments such as industrial estates and areas close to busy roads, dirt will build up more quickly than elsewhere.
Rainfall will have a degree of washing effect. However, any area of the building sheltered from rain, for example the top of roller doors or overhanging eaves, will not benefit from this natural cleaning effect.
Cleaning
Large quantities of debris can also lead to the overflowing or ponding of water, particularly in guttering, which may also lead to corrosion. To avoid this, debris should be swept into a pile, using a stiff, soft-bristled brush and removed. Shovels or hard tools should be avoided. All dirty areas should then be washed down using clean water. Do not use salt water or high pressure jets with a hose. If necessary use a recommended cleaning product, or a 10% solution of a good household or industrial detergent, before applying a final hose down with clean water. A soft-bristled brush can be used for particularly stubborn deposits.
Oil can be removed by wiping the area with white spirit before cleaning and rinsing as for general dirt and debris.
In some areas birds can be a nuisance. A build-up of bird droppings can occur on roofs and this may significantly alter the pH of the surface water run-off. Buildings used as communal roosts, where an excessive build-up of bird droppings is possible, should be regularly monitored and cleaned down.

This old farm cottage is being renovated back to its original condition, as far as is possible anyway. The slates used so far came off of the roof before the wall was rebuilt.
